According to the latest reports, the United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens. U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world’s 875 million known firearms. 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States. It’s pretty safe to assume you or a family member will encounter a firearm, even if you don’t own one, at some point.

Over the last few years, there has been a surge in first-time buyers of firearms. That’s great!  But once that sale is made, many do not have a clue what to do with it. Buying “tools” is the easy part.  I like to tell new (and existing) firearm owners. “Just because you have a guitar in your closet, doesn’t mean you’re ready to play in a band”. Many purchase firearms without any idea what comes next. It’s frightening that many, without training, feel they could use a firearm to defend themselves.

The average citizen won’t consider firearms training unless it is safe, affordable and flexible. Training also needs to be convenient and entertaining. Intrepid Firearm’s training model meets these requirements.

We developed our training from scratch with the perspective of the armed citizen. Most training available is taught by someone with an LEO or military background. These tactics are valuable, but, they are mostly offensive. Offensive tactics do not always transition well for the armed citizen. The tactics of police and military are good for what they do. They chase bad guys. They go into dangerous situations knowing it’s a problem. They have body armor, and other gear to mitigate the risk. They usually operate in offensive teams. Professionals pick the conflict and are ready for it. As an armed citizen, you don’t get to pick your fight; the fight picks you!  And when the fight comes, you will likely be alone or with family and friends.  You will have seconds to react and determine the outcome. This is the type of encounter you need to train for.   All the other tacti-cool stuff is great,  but, can you get your gun on target quickly and get good hits? Nothing else matters.  You can’t miss fast enough to win a gunfight.

ing. The class is great for both visual and hands on learners. It was really well done and safe. Dan has a very informational and easy to understand PowerPoint presentation he goes over. It meets all the requirements to get your concealed carry license even, I believe. I am a hands on learner so what came next was especially helpful training for me. Dan walked us through his arsenal of different handguns and how to load (not live fire bullets), discharge, and reload all the different ones. I was hesitant at first but it was a perfectly safe environment and opportunity to try it. We did this until we felt comfortable and got quicker with these actions. It also helped me to get a better idea of what would work best for me for a concealed carry weapon in the future. Dan was right there answering my questions, even ones that I may be embarrassed to ask to show my lack of knowledge, but he was so kind, patient, and encouraging. My favorite part of the class was probably the laser target shooting. I want to get one of those! We practiced with real pistols that were decommissioned so that it is a real gun but has a laser sensor and keeps track of how well you hit your targets. It was really fun and a great way to improve accuracy and other skills. All in all, I highly recommend taking classes from Dan at Intrepid. He makes it a priority to continue his own education and training. That is what the best teachers of anything do; therefore, he is a wealth of knowledge and badassness (yes, that's a word- look it up and see Dan Porter's picture). Dan loves what he does and it is infectious. I had fun, felt safe the entire time, and learned a ton. I can't wait to take more classes from him soon.Hide this content.

I could have imagined. The class is a combination of lecture and hands-on. I was able to handle several different pistols, learn how to load and clear them and work on my aim using lasers. I went from never handling a gun, to knowing how to have the proper grip, load, clear and aim ... along with a heavy dose of why you never hope to be in a position to have to use a gun! Dan is professional, knowledgeable and cares about making sure you "get it". I highly recommend his classes.Hide this content.

systems. High capacity magazines. Desensitization of our youth. Orlando was my tipping point. Another mass shooting; more needless death. Another asshole with a gun mowing down innocent people. But you see, I was also raised in the country. Where everyone, and I mean EVERYONE owns a gun. So I know, without a fiber of a doubt, that disarming this nation is a preposterous and even dangerous idea/agenda. We are born with two innate fears; loud noises and falling. As we grow older life experience teaches us that there is so much more in this world to be fearful of. Strangers, change, discomfort, shame, rattlesnakes. Some of these fears serve us, but in my case, this fear of firearms had moved beyond rational trepidation and into resentment and terror; my fear was no longer keeping me safe. Firearms and rattlesnakes had become very, very similar beasts in my book. So what do I do with all of these strong emotions? Well, Rumi said “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” I have the pleasure of knowing Dan for a couple years and for two people who perhaps stand on opposite sides of the political spectrum, we genuinely get along really, REALLY well. I find him to be competent, thoughtful, kind and genuine. A person of great integrity and action. So when he reached out to me (after a particular strongly worded Facebook post concerning gun safety), and suggested that perhaps I take his Introductions To Pistols class, my knee jerk reaction was not “NO CHANCE IN HELL!” I like to think that I am not so arrogant and stubborn as to not be willing to acknowledge my own failings and short comings. My relationship with firearms had become toxic; and I was given a golden opportunity to redefine it. Up to this point I had been perfectly content having never held or fired a firearm, but that moment had passed. I couldn’t in good faith spew my opinion about an object I knew so very little about. I couHide this content.

sing firearms of various design and caliber, I had never really had as comprehensive and bottom to top analysis and explanation of various types of handguns, their functions, ammunition and the basic how's and whys of a simple cartridge internal and external parts. Of course I knew basic center fire and rim fire ammo but my wife had never really paid much mind to these things and was fascinated by Dan's calm, patient explanation of the tiniest detail. On to the sidearms themselves he explained the single action, double action, and the revolver designed to use both single and double action in a manner that enabled her to understand without question how and why they functioned the way they did. On to the semi auto handguns, again he broke down their component parts on the screen with cutaways showing exactly what function each part played. She was then shown how to load the magazine with blanks, insert the magazine and charge the weapon for firing. Then on to unloading and making the weapon safe. Both revolver and auto proper handling techniques of passing weapons back and forth were explained and practiced. Dan has such comprehensive skill in setting up the computerized program in it's entirety, I would highly recommend his course to anyone regardless of how skillful they may imagine they are. Over the years I have seen many mistakes by experienced shooters that could have ended badly and some that did. I know I committed a few and this course brings those "minor" errors to the forefront. If ultimately my wife decides to carry she will have a much better understanding, and even if she doesn't, she may someday be able to assist, God forbid, if needed. There is nothing to fear about handling handguns as long as you follow the simple procedures outlined by Dan's program. I am not overstating when I say it is the most comprehensive safety program I have ever heard of delivered in a manner that is easy on the mind. Thanks Dan.Hide this content.
